Environmental  Challenges in the Aerospace Industry

Effective Fire Suppression while minimizing long term damage to ecosystems.

Dr. Olson talks about the challenges that he and his team faced during the design building process. He also talked about the implementation of various complex test for CF3I, as well as its surprising outcome.

Switching from Halon 1301 to CF3I. Halon 1301 (CF3Br); a fire depressant used in airplanes was discontinued in 1994 due to its ozone depleting properties. Extensive research and time have been put into finding an alternative. One compound: Trifluoro (CF3I); a similar compound which has a relatively short lifetime in the atmosphere might be the key.
